Stellaris

Background:
I did not know anything of 4X genre before I played this game. Of course I had tried Civilization IV but the turnbased style did not appeal to me. All in all I found the game a little cartoonish. In 2010 I bought Europa Universalis 3 when it was on sale. A friend abroad said it was good. I actually did not know anyhting of the game and when I started it nothing was understandable. The game was uninstalled and put in a locker. Fast forward some years and about 2013 I saw that Europa Universalis 4 was on sale here. I bought it with all DLC`s. Again I did not understand a thing. It is funny to think that I even did not complete the tutorial. I was stuck in Essex! But with a little bit of endeavour I learnt a lot by reading wikis, watch Lets play videos on YouTube and talk to people on Paradox forums. I have about 349 hours played and I love it!!!

Since I got this admiration for Paradox Interactive it was reasonable to look to their other games. Among many Stellaris captured my attention. Like most Paradox games the learning curve is steep. But this time they have listened to the fans and implemented a good tutor ingame. They have also made room for modders and right there are many mods to select made by players. I myself have made plenty of music mods and I am not even a programmer! But the game engages so much and I learn practically new things every day.

Gameplay:
At the start of the game you can choose between several different species with their unique ethos, tradition, government type and so on. Here you can also customize a lot and make something you like. In the game details screen you can choose among many thing clustered or random placed empires. Do you want some species to be advanced at the start? Do you prefer the same FTL (Faster Than Light) technology for all players or can they have their own? Do you want end crisis? All these options are available in the game details screen. When you start the game you get the option to have full tutorial, partial or off. This is very good option for newbies. You start in your system and start surveying and so on. You are in action!

Graphics:
The visuals are stunning and mouthwatering. Their are plenty of mods which make the experience even better. The UI (User Interface) is easy to learn and after some practice it is very good to use. But I recommend installing a UI overhauls mod which makes thing even more systematic and easy to find. If you want to use hotkeys they are in place. Battles or a joy to experience but you may want to reduce the blooming effect.

Sound:
Sound is good as it is in all Paradox games. The official soundtrack is beautiful and if you want more music, take a look in the modding community on Steam for the game. There are many good and excellents mods to choose between. Another good thing Paradox did was to implement a music player in the game so you actually see the tracks. They did the same in Europa Universalis 4. Clearly a forward looking company, Paradox.

Content:
At this moment the game is very rich on content early on and in the middle but the last part is rather emptier. So you basically just go to galaxy map and see how things are going. But as we know Partadox games tend to be better and better as time goes because they are sincerely engaged in their products. So we can expect thing to change in the coming time. They have already released some patches and DLC`s and a new patch is coming next week. Of course you can subscribe to content mods and get more flavour in the game.

Verdict:
I highly recommend this game and give it 8/10. Never has a game engaged me so much. I dream of it, think of it and engage a lot. I am sure you will have the same experience. It will surely be supported in the years to come. My personal opinion is that it surpasses many titles in this genre. A huge plus is also the modding community which are creative and innovative.
